If the editors at The Patriot Ledger truly believe that “to guide drug policy, you must take ownership of it,” (Our Opinion: “Legislature wise to address legalization of marijuana,” Oct. 20), then they should be advocating in support of legalizing and regulating marijuana – not opining against it.
Only through state government regulation will we be able to bring necessary controls to the marijuana market.

EDMONTON, AB, Oct. 31, 2009/ Troy Media/ — As combines mowed farmers’ fields across Canadian prairies this fall, there was a scene near Edmonton right out of a time warp: – a crew of workers actually using their hands to harvest plants.
The workers were taking down three-metre-tall hemp plants at a breeding nursery outside of Vegreville, AB. The plants, which dwarfed the workers, were being bundled, numbered, bagged and transported to researchers, who see a high-tech future for the ancient plant.
The Alberta Research Council (ARC) is working to help hemp find its way into everything from homes to cars to clothes. It’s part of a campaign to see our agriculture and forestry industries compete in the global push for sustainable products.

RICHARD BROOKHISER: I think it was a recognition of the political reality that in 14 states, state laws have been passed to lift the penalties on medical use of marijuana. Now, this is something I had to do myself. I had cancer in 1992. And one thing marijuana can do is relieve the nausea thats often an effect of chemotherapy.
So thats a hobbyhorse of mine. I think its a very important issue. And voters in 14 states have taken that position. Now, federal law prevails over those state laws. But what President Obama decided was we will not use our resources of law enforcement to prosecute medical users in states where the state laws allow them to do that.
